Penny Hess is the Chairwoman of the African People’s Solidarity Committee (APSC), the organization of white people under the direct leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party.
Penny has been a member of APSC since its founding by the Party in 1976.
Under the leadership of Chairman Omali Yeshitela and the African People’s Socialist Party, Penny has raised and helped popularize the demand for white reparations to African People.
Penny was present in Brooklyn, NY in 1982 when the Party held the first Tribunal on Reparations to African People which found the U.S. government guilty for the genocide of African people and demanded $1.4 trillion in reparations for stolen labor in the U.S. alone.
During the 1980s Penny was in the thick of the Uhuru Movement’s on-the-ground struggles during the Party’s powerful Oakland Years.
In 1991 she wrote the book Culture of Violence, updating and enlarging it in 2000 as Overturning the Culture of Violence which detailed the complicity and participation of white people in the historical assaults and colonial violence against African and other oppressed peoples. The concluding chapter calls for all white people to join the struggle for reparations to African people as the way forward for all humanity.
Penny organizes and has been part of many reparations campaigns such as the Marches Against Genocide, the founding of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement, and many fundraising institutions of the African People’s Socialist Party such as the Uhuru Bakery Cafe’, Uhuru Foods and Pies and the Days of Reparations to African People.
Under the leadership of the Party Penny has spoken throughout the U.S., Europe and in Africa, calling on white people to join the movement for reparations as a revolutionary demand.
