OVERVIEW

The Uhuru Solidarity Movement (USM) is an organization of white people and other allies who work under the direct leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party, a revolution organization working for African liberation. Uhuru Solidarity Movement members work within the white community to raise resources and to win North Americans to stand on the right side of humanity by joining into the fight for African liberation. USM has many events and activities for which it must mobilize it members and supporters such as the annual “Day in Solidarity with African People”. Our volunteers play an important role in mobilizing support for the programs of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement.

OPEN POSITIONS ON THE USM NATIONAL STEERING COMMITTEE

Literature Distribution Coordinator

The National Literature Distribution Coordinator is responsible for the following duties:

  • developing and carrying out a national strategy to distribute the books, pamphlets and other literature of Burning Spear Publications in the Euro-American community including the works of Chairman Omali Yeshitela, Penny Hess and The Burning Spear Newspaper, through outreach tables, book signing events, book clubs and studies, and other tactics of distribution
  • Ensures that every active organizer of USM is stocked with the Chairman’s books and pamphlets
  • Keeps track of resources generated through sales of Burning Spear publications and makes sure that funds are turned over to Agitprop for the purchase of books by USM distributors

Membership Chair

The National Membership Chair is responsible for leading a membership committee to carry out the following duties:

  • Develop membership program including: defining the “benefits” of being a USM member, points of unity, membership survey/orientation process, and recognition and awarding of members and sustainers
  • Keeps calendar of members’ birthdays and sends birthday message on behalf of USM
  • Produce and distribute USM membership materials-– membership brochure, membership form, etc
  • Follows up every with new member, making sure that every new member receives a card and welcome packet within 48 hours
  • Respond to membership inquiries in a timely manner
  • Gathers weekly and monthly mass recruitment reports from all branches/areas, addressing the following questions: how many sign-ups, how many members, status of follow-up
  • Coordinate the annual membership appeal at the USM National Convention and Days in Solidarity with African People events
  • Provides leadership, training, and materials to USM organizers on how to carry out membership appeals at ongoing local USM activities
  • Build strong working relationship with and knowledge of our members, and designates best way to work with members including assigning sponsors based on members’ location, skills, and interests
  • Coordinate monthly renewals process
  • Make sure we’re facebook friends with all of our new members (or otherwise connected with them via social media)
  • Coordinates at least one annual membership drive
  • Maintain/update the USM membership database (CRM)

Political Action Chair

The National Political Action Chair is responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic plan of political action for the USM. The plan must include a calendar of regular political activity of the USM, consistent with the purpose of USM. The National Political Action Chair builds a subcommittee consisting of representatives from all branches, calls for and leads meetings of the subcommittee and gathers reports to ensure the political actions are being carried out. He or she is responsible for the coordination of all political actions including community meetings, press conferences, protests, forums, marches, demonstrations and other events.

National Secretary

The National Secretary is responsible for the following duties:

  • Work with the National Chair to create the agenda for National Steering Committee meetings.
  • Send the agenda and conference call number to all meeting participants at least three days before the meeting.
  • Take the minutes in the meetings using the minutes template.
  • Send out the action items and minutes 24 hours after the meetings to all participants; send out action items again three days later with a call for all NSC members to report on the status of their action items.
  • Update and store all documentation of the USM including digital storage through databases.
  • Add all new contacts’ email addresses to the national USM listbox.
  • Coordinate all correspondence between USM and other organizations, especially winning endorsements for DSAP campaign.

USM COMMITTEES

USM Convention Committees

Registration and Membership: The Membership and Registration Committee takes on the task of winning  new members of USM before the Convention, and leading the process of the registration of  people for the Convention. This is a political task within the campaign of building USM internationally, and all members must be won to participation in the branch-building process before, during and after the Convention. Positions available include:

  • Registration Coordinator
  • Membership Secretary/Admin
  • Membership Week Representatives in each area (regional/city/local, etc)
  • Membership Agit Prop/Info-Ed Coordinator

Outreach Committee: The Outreach Committee promotes the USM National Convention through effective Agit Prop in print, online and media; promote the “Days in Solidarity with African People” events nationwide, promote the “Take the Pledge of Solidarity with African People” campaign nationwide; promote special events and campaigns of USM, provides training to new members on tabling, literature distribution and selling the Burning Spear newspaper, and wins North Americans to visit the USM blog, website, social media sites. Positions include

  • HTMLs Coordinator
  • Social Media Coordinator

Fundraising/Reparations Committee:The Fundraising Committee works closely with Membership and Outreach Committees to ensure goals are met in recruiting new members. In addition, the fundraising committee works on a sponsorship and vendor campaigns to raise resources. This includes working with Info Ed to create a Convention program that features advertisement space paid for by sponsors. This committee also helps with marketing and promoting the Convention, including doing research on other conferences that attract a similar audience. The committee will create a how-to manual for future conventions! Volunteers for this committee will gain or strengthen skills in developing marketing materials, sponsorship packets, communication and writing. Positions available include:

Info-Ed: The Info-Ed Committee establishes the theme, content and related graphics for the USM Convention It works closely with the National Outreach Coordinator to make sure all materials are completed and distributed. Positions available include:

  STANDING COMMITTEES

 Membership Committee

This committee leads the membership campaign, coordinates international membership weeks, maintains the membership database, monitors membership renewals, mails out packets to new members, orients new members into USM, and creates the membership newsletter. Positions available include:

  • Membership Administrator: Maintains membership database; collects memberships from local/regional chairs; takes minutes of meetings and sends out meeting agendas; sends reminders of expiration to members
  • Regional Chairs:  Leads membership campaign ; keeps track of region/unit members; recruits members; maintains membership material for region
  • Reparations Chair/Treasurer: Collects and maintains bank account of membership dues; produces report on finances; develops budget; informs committee of funds available for materials
  • National Outreach Chair for Membership Campaign: Puts forth outreach plan for membership campaign and holds it accountable
  • Newsletter Coordinator: Acts as editor of newsletter; establishes and maintains committee to produce newsletter every other month

 Outreach Committee

This committee includes both on-the-ground and social media outreach strategies. Includes training members on tabling, postering, leafletting, and door-to-door. Positions available include:

 Information and Education Committee

This committee ensures that all USM information and materials ares synchronized in spreading the line of African Internationalism relevant to upcoming USM mobilizations and events and helps to build for those mobilizations and events. Info-Ed produces fliers about upcoming political action campaigns; coordinates the USM blog; coordinates the Reparations in Action radio show on Uhuru Radio; carries out the USM Burning Spears selling campaign; assists in developing weekly studies of The Burning Spear Newspaper and other materials; develops all USM materials ; and creates rap and guidelines for speaking to classes. Qualifications

  • Maintain detailed notes regarding each call made including who contacted, number of calls, outcome of each call, number of people mobilized, etc.
  • Report to the assistant phone banking coordinator regarding phone banking actions and success

 POSTERING COORDINATOR

Qualifications

  • Ability to physically place posters in designated event cities (Primarily St Petersburg, FL, Philadelphia, PA, San Diego, CA, Oakland, CA)
  • Ability to organize teams of posterers on short notice
  • Ability to create postering plans covering specific regions of DSAP event city
  • Ability to train posterers on how to place posters in community
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of poster plans and areas complete
  • Produce quality work within tight time constraints
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Work effectively under pressure
  • Use independent judgment

Responsibilities

  • Develop postering plans
  • Mobilize teams of volunteer posterers
  • Train posterers on how to poster in the community
  • Maintain volunteer posterers in Excel spreadsheet
  • Develop and maintain recordkeeping system for postering: Maps, regions, number of posters, outcome of each postering run, etc.
  • Report to the designated contact within the Uhuru Solidarity Movement regarding postering actions and success

 POSTERERS

Qualifications

 TABLING COORDINATOR

Responsibilities

  • Develop outreach tabling plan in conjunction with the outreach coordinator
  • Mobilize teams of USM volunteers to table
  • Train volunteers on how to how to talk to people about the DSAP, why they should attend, why they should take the pledge and become sustainers, why they should donate, etc.
  • Maintain volunteer contacts in Excel spreadsheet
  • Develop and maintain records using USM procedures including who contacted, number of contacts, outcome of each contact, number of people mobilized, etc.
  • Must take responsibility for all resources gained through tabling as well as contact sheets used at tabling events
  • Report to the designated contact within the Uhuru Solidarity Movement regarding tabling actions and success
  • Coordinate follow up calls to new contacts as directed

  • Must take responsibility for all resources gained through tabling as well as securing contact sheets used at tabling events
  • Report to the designated contact within the Uhuru Solidarity Movement regarding tabling actions and success
  • Conduct follow up calls to new contacts as needed

 MEDIA COORDINATOR

 FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR
