The Uhuru Movement is organizing the “Voices of Resistance” benefit concert to raise resources for the “Hands Off Uhuru! Hands off Africa!” Legal Defense Fund, and Florida musicians of diverse genres have stepped forward to defend the democratic rights of the African community.
Last year, on July 29th, the U.S. government waged the most serious attack on the Black Liberation Movement since the 1960s when the FBI raided seven homes and offices of Uhuru Movement leaders including the home of Uhuru Movement founder/leader Chairman Omali Yeshitela, as well as the Uhuru House community center in St. Petersburg, Florida.
On April 18, 2023, indictments were issued by the U.S. Department of Justice against African People’s Socialist Party Chairman Omali Yeshitela, African People’s Solidarity Committee Chair Penny Hess and Uhuru Solidarity Movement Chair Jesse Nevel.

Says Jamie Simpson, Chair of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement - St. Petersburg, “We hope this benefit concert will start a movement of artists taking a stand against the U.S. government’s attack on the democratic rights of the African community. We will call on people to actively support the African community's right to advocate and organize for their own liberation and self-determination.”
