On Tuesday night, February 10th, 2015 a 46-year-old white man named Craig Stephen Hicks stalked three Muslim students outside of a condominium complex on Summerwalk Circle near the University of North Carolina and shot each one of them in the head execution-style.
Deah Barakat, 23, was a second-year student at the University of North Carolina’s School of Dentistry; his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, was set to enroll there in the fall. The third victim was her 19-year-old sister, Razan, a student at nearby North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
This brutal act of white nationalist violence by a citizen of the oppressor nation population against three Muslims was quickly whitewashed by local media and the Chapel Hill police department as a “dispute over parking.”
“It was execution style, a bullet in every head,” Mohammad Abu-Salha, father of one of the victims, told the News and Observer in Raleigh.
“This was not a dispute over a parking space; this was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before, and he talked with them with his gun in his belt. And they were uncomfortable with him, but they did not know he would go this far.”
The white killer’s wife defended her husband’s actions as a response to a parking conflict, “not religiously motivated.”
This absurd, offensive and nonsensical story about the parking dispute is meant to diminish the public’s perception of Hicks’ act as one of anti-Muslim violence.
But the fact is that regardless of whether Hicks had parking or Islam on his mind when he pulled the trigger, his act was one of white colonial violence and murder against three non-white, Muslim people, consistent with the culture of anti-Muslim violence that is embedded in the DNA of American society.
Hicks saw himself as a white man reserving the right to exact a death sentence upon these three Muslims.
One cannot help but think of George Zimmerman’s execution of Trayvon Martin.
As the police and white vigilantes shed the blood of African or black people every 26 hours in this country (according to studies conducted by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement) the Muslim community inside the U.S. also finds itself under assault.
Muslim organizations and mosques have been infiltrated by FBI agents with entrapment schemes to arrest and imprison Muslims on trumped up terrorism charges.
It is not only the U.S. government that has terrorized the Muslim population but ordinary white people as well.
In the jingoistic bloodlust that swept white America in the aftermath of the 9/11 events, white people unleashed a reign of terror against Muslims. Nearly 500 Muslims were brutally assaulted by white people in the year after September 11th, 2001 alone.
According to a study conducted by the Southern Poverty Law Center, “Anti-Muslim hate crimes soared by 50% in 2010, skyrocketing over 2009 levels in a year marked by the incendiary rhetoric of Islam-bashing politicians and activists.”
This is the domestic counterinsurgency of the U.S. government against the colonized and oppressed Arab and Muslim populations inside U.S. borders.
Abroad, the U.S. military wreaks havoc across the Muslim world with drone strikes, military occupations, hideous torture and detention centers, and brutal rapes and humiliation of women and children by U.S. soldiers.
The war on Muslims is not particular to the United States. In Europe, Muslims find themselves the target of vile white terror and persecution.
The government of France has banned the wearing of the traditional burqa by Muslim women and has restricted the right of people in France to protest the illegitimate Israeli state’s murder of the Palestinians.
In the days following the shootings at the office of the anti-Muslim propaganda magazine Charlie Hedbo, French citizens ransacked masjids, firebombed them and even threw the severed heads of pigs into the Muslim place of worship.
Chairman Omali Yeshitela, founder and leader of the Uhuru Movement, has explained that the European or white nation came into existence through slavery, genocide and colonialism, including colonial plunder of the Muslim world by white invaders.
The Chairman explains that it was the enslavement of African people and genocide against the Indigenous people of the Americas that birthed the modern system of parasitic capitalism and elevated Europe from a barren and scarce land of warring tribes into a unified white empire that could tower over the rest of the world.
“Europe,” the Chairman says, “came into existence as primarily white and Christian.”
From its inception, there has always been an anti-Islamic component to the white or European identity and society, tracing back to the original theft of resources from Muslim peoples during the Christian Crusades.
The reality is that when white people like Hicks or the Frenchmen who firebomb mosques carry out their anti-Muslim violence, they are functioning as extensions of the Euro-American colonial state. They are agents of coercion whose actions serve to maintain the status quo of a social and economic system built on oppression, terror, slavery and colonialism.
There is nothing “un-American” about killing Muslims. It is squarely within the tradition of white domination and violence on which America is built. The people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Libya, Syria and other countries of the Middle East can attest to this reality.
Therefore, we reject the hypocrisy of liberal imperialists who feign outrage at the killings of three Muslims in Chapel Hill while at the same time providing cover for similar atrocities carried out by the U.S. army in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and other Muslim countries that are facing the wrath of U.S. imperialist aggression every single day.
Imperialism is in an ever deepening crisis and the peoples of the world, whether in Pakistan or Ferguson are fighting back to reclaim their lives, their resources and their destinies.
White people, we are not bystanders. Our white lifestyles are fueled (in the case of Middle Eastern oil, literally) by the stolen resources of the colonized peoples of the world.
There is a direct relationship between the wealth, prosperity and security we assume for ourselves and the brutality, oppression and murder imposed on the world’s non-white peoples.
We have a tremendous responsibility on our shoulders.
When we take an honest look at our own history, we can see that it is not just the politicians and the militarist warmongers whose hands are stained in the blood of billions of African, Muslim and Indigenous peoples.
It is also our hands soaked in blood, hands that have either partaken in this carnage for centuries, or remained idle and complicit while the rulers did the dirty work in our name, and for our benefit.
It is time to break the deadly silence that has bound us to our parasitic ruling class, for five hundred years.
Silence is complicity.
We have to take a side.
Stand on the side of the oppressed.
Join the Uhuru Solidarity Movement, the organization of white people under the leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party, organizing in the white community for reparations to Africans and oppressed peoples everywhere.
When the oppressed peoples of the world have their freedom, resources and power, a future without violence, war, oppression, slavery and genocide will flourish, a world in which all peoples have self-determination, justice, and genuine peace.
Justice for Deah Barakat, Yusor Mohamad Abu Salha, and Razan Abu Salha!
Stop the war on Muslims!
Stop the war on Africans!
Victory to the oppressed peoples of the world!
White people must Break the Silence and Refuse to be Complicit!
